Fingering Exercises & Techniques: Set One

Exercises: One    Two    Three    Four    Five    Six    Seven

The exercises on this page are intended to help you develop strength, dexterity, and coordination. Each includes a midi sound file as an example, and a tab file that you can download to practice with. Playing along with the tab is highly recommended in order to develop a good sense of rhythm and timing. Play these slowly at first, with the emphasis on clean playing and good timing (keep the beat).

Practice Tips: Play each of these execises, and the variations, for at least 5 minutes each and every day. Play each one slowly at first, then increase your speed as your strength and coordination grows. Play along with supplied TablEdit files, and increase the tempo setting slightly each day. At the end of one month, you will be amazed at your improvement, and will find yourself able to play songs you once considered impossible!

Exercise Variations:

Remember, you're building "muscle memory" patterns, so that your fingers will go where they need to go without any thought. To get the most benefit from these exercises, mix them up with each other. For example, combine exercises #one and #three and then play on the first string, then on the second string, and so on. Teach your fingers --- by practicing different fingering combinations. In this way, you will develop the neccesary dexterity, strength and coordination you need to play the most advanced music!

Sample mix and match fingering patterns:
  1. 1-2-3-4 , 1-2-3-4 (Repeat on each string as above)
  2. 1-3-2-4 , 1-3-2-4 (Repeat on each string as above)
  3. 1-4-3-4 , 1-4-3-4 (Repeat on each string as above)
  4. 3-4-2-3-1-2-3-4 (Repeat on each string as above)
